The BC Curriculum is the standard that teachers must follow for teaching students. It has each subject broken down by year from kindergarten to grade 12. The subjects, at least for an elementary school grade, is broken down into three main parts: Big Ideas, Content, and Curricular Competencies. There are also core competencies that incorporate communication, thinking, and personal and social competencies that are skills students need to develop to successfully move through education and into their chosen careers. I think the curriculum is laid out in such a way that will help me be successful in teaching my students to be critical thinkers, while also teaching them the necessary skills needed to be successful throughout school. I like that there is more than just a list of content that needs to be checked off, and that there is a focus beyond knowing certain skills.
